Skeletons dressed up in
gala attire are out
for flower viewing.
By Onitsura
When reading my haiku, I originally had a few different interpretations; the one I wanted to move forward with was that the person writing this is reflecting on the shortness of life and death. To tell this interpretation, I wanted to show a story of people dressed up nicely for a funeral (skeletons dressed up in gala attire are out). Also, the idea that they are viewing this person’s death, which is (for flower viewing).
color palette and early sketching
With the idea of the shortness of life and death, I started sketching ideas for spreads to explore this. Based on analogous color harmony of blue-green, yellow-green, and green.  I chose 5-6 colors to display the idea of Earth and life.
ideation
Starting with a simple kit of parts, I created my first compositions. To represent people, I used circles, and the lines throughout my whole story represent the cycle of life, which is why they are different lengths to symbolize the different lengths of people’s individual lives.
refinement
Once finalizing the concept of each page in my spread, I continued to refine my composition as a whole in order to lead the viewer through the story and lead their eyes to the next page. The goal was to create unique pages while also making it feel cohesive as a whole.
